Americans for Prosperity, which has ramped up its direct support of candidates in recent years in addition to its usual work on issue advocacy, is endorsing state Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua, in the 7th CD.

The group wrote in a memo its reasons for backing Tiffany. But AFP declined to detail what its endorsement would entail other than saying it was “fully committed to mobilizing its grassroots activists” in the district to back Tiffany. It is one of the first groups to endorse in the race that has pledged to commit its infrastructure to the campaign.

The state senator is one of three Republicans running to replace former GOP U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, along with Jason Church, an aide to U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, and businessman Michael Opela.

On the Dem side, Wausau School Board President Tricia Zunker, an associate justice of the Ho-Chunk Nation Supreme Court, and businessman Lawrence Dale, who lives in Michigan, have announced plans to run.

In the past year, AFP has endorsed now-Justice Brian Hagedorn, doing mailers and door hangers on his behalf, and former Gov. Scott Walker. It ran several TV ads and canvassed for Walker, who lost his reelection bid.
