Alderman Cavalier Johnson invites qualified real estate developers to submit proposals for a mixed-use project to replace the Capitol Library at 3969 N. 74th St. The City of Milwaukee, acting through the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL), is accepting the submittals until 4 p.m. on January 29, 2019. According to the request for proposal (RFP), the new building should have a signature design that draws attention to the library space. The non-library component must be housing, retail, office, or another commercial use appropriate for co-location with a public library and should strive to add to the tax base of the city.
“With the new library being a catalytic community economic development project, this is an exciting opportunity for a developer to help shape the future of this neighborhood,” said Ald. Johnson.
The RFP allows suggestions for a new site but must be within about one mile of the current Capitol Branch.
“After successfully redeveloping several library branches in recent years, we continue to improve library service and save ongoing operating costs while fully leveraging private and public dollars,” said Alderman Michael J. Murphy, an MPL board member and whose district the current Capitol branch is located.
An information session to answer questions about the RFP will take place on January 14 at 2 p.m. at the Capitol Library (3969 N. 74th St.) in the Community Room.
