Tony Evers and GOP lawmakers today laid down markers on the upcoming fight over expanding Medicaid, with the new guv saying he made clear he plans to include the move in his upcoming budget.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, told reporters after the closed-door caucus meeting with Evers that expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act was a non-starter for them.

“I think the request was don’t pick things that have no chance of passing just to score political points,” Vos said.

In a separate news conference, Evers said he believes the public is on his side.

“We will continue to fight for that, and we feel very confident that we will win that fight,” Evers said.

Evers also said he discussed the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. with GOP lawmakers in what he largely described as a get-to-know-you session.
