Milwaukee, WI – Senator Chris Larson released the following statement regarding Governor Evers’ state budget address:

“After nearly a decade of budget priorities that have endangered our shared Wisconsin values, Governor Evers has shown his commitment to restoring those values by thoughtfully crafting a state budget that reflects the needs and priorities of our neighbors, not special interest lobbyists. Evers listened to the people and set the budget accordingly.

“Governor Evers has certainly shown that investing in our children is at the center of this budget. Tonight, the governor pledged historic funding increases for our neighborhood public schools, including $600 million for special education and a return to the commitment of two-thirds funding of our local schools by the state. This reinvestment in our K-12 students, along with the governor’s pledge of $150 million in additional support to the University of Wisconsin System, will allow our children and our economy to flourish for generations to come.

“Along with his proposals for our children’s education, Governor Evers has focused his first state budget on creating and restoring policies that reflect the shared values of our neighbors. Returning science to the Department of Natural Resources, investing in healthy birth outcomes, focusing tax relief on the middle class, expanding Medicaid, and ensuring access to safe, clean drinking water; these are all investments the people of Wisconsin have been waiting for.

“I look forward to digging in further to see everything included in the budget and will be holding listening sessions to get my neighbors input.

“As the people of Wisconsin overwhelmingly support the ideas proposed under the budget laid out by Governor Evers, I urge my Republican colleagues to work in good faith with the Governor and legislative Democrats to achieve a bold new path forward for our great state.”
