League of Women Voters March 2 Public Program: Immigration Policies – DACA and Keeping Families Together
Milwaukee – Immigration reform is the topic of a public information forum presented by the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County on Saturday, March 2, 2019. This free program will be held at Alverno College, Lampe Recital Hall in Alphonsa Hall, 3441 S. 39th St., Milwaukee.
The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon, with social time beginning at 9:30 a.m. Facilitated small-group discussions will run from 12:15 until 1 p.m. for those who would like to participate.
“The League of Women Voters has long-standing positions on immigration that support keeping immediate families together and being responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises,” said Peggy Creer, president of the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County. “Our public issues forums are designed to inform people about important public policy issues and to promote civic engagement.”
The focus of the League’s public forum on immigration is on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and on policies that have separated families while in ICE custody. “The forum goals are to promote an understanding of these two key immigration issues, their impact nationally and locally, and to promote an awareness of the League’s policy advocate role,“ stated program chair, Eloisa Gómez.
Speakers: Dr. Rachel Ida Buff teaches history and comparative ethnic studies at UW-Milwaukee, where she also directs the Cultures and Communities Program. She is the author of Against the Deportation Terror: Organizing for Immigrant Rights in the Twentieth Century.
Attorney Ed Fallone is currently an Associate Professor of Law at Marquette University Law School. His primary areas of teaching and scholarship include constitutional law, corporate law, immigration law, and white-collar crime. He is a member of the Undocumented Students Task Force at Marquette.
Margarita Garcia-Rojas is a UW-Milwaukee undergraduate student majoring in Latin American Studies & History. She will share some local research along with one or more of the experiences of a Milwaukee “Dreamer,” a person in the DACA Program.
Kathleen Dunn will moderate the panel. She recently retired from a 25-year career as a talk show host at Wisconsin Public Radio.
