MILWAUKEE — Marquette University’s Klingler College of Arts and Sciences will host an ecumenical peace forum titled “The Role of the Church in the Civil Rights Movement: Past, Present and Future” on Friday, April 12, at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 E. Wisconsin Ave.

The forum is co-sponsored by CM CARES®, the Church Mutual Insurance Company Foundation, and focuses on the key role the church has played in the civil rights movement both historically and in present day events. The purpose of the forum will be to explore the past, present and future of this relationship from a variety of engaging presenters.

“It is fitting that churches and their communities have played an important role in the civil rights movement and that they continue in that movement,” Dr. Richard Holz, dean of the Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences said. “This event is a great opportunity to hold a conversation on what that role looks like today.”

Reverend Alvin Love, pastor at Lilydale First Baptist Church in Chicago and national clergy advisor to President Barack Obama, will be the keynote speaker. The program will include a panel discussion and Q&A on “The Church and Civil Rights: Going Local,” and a closing reflection on the future of social and racial justice in the church.

A reception will follow at 4 p.m. Registration for this free, public event is available online.
