The Common Council unanimously approved legislation on Tuesday, March 26 to create a new voter registration program for residents of the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM).

Sponsored by Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, Common Council File #181773 directs the Election Commission to cooperate with HACM to develop and implement a voter registration program for its residents.

“This legislation is pivotal in addressing voting inequality and voter suppression in federal housing,” said Ald. Rainey. “We must do all we can to ensure every community has access to fair and accessible elections. This new program will help combat the voting disparities that are a result of a broken voter registration system.”

Residents of federally subsidized housing are among those most impacted by voter registration restrictions; this initiative aims to increase voter participation and reduce voting obstacles and disparities found in federal housing.

This legislation was co-sponsored by Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderman Robert J. Bauman, Alderman Cavalier Johnson, Alderman Tony Zielinski, Alderman Mark Borkowski, Council President Ashanti Hamilton, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman José G. Pérez, and Alderwoman Chantia Lewis.
