Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes to Speak at Newsmaker Luncheon Hosted by Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com

MILWAUKEE – Mandela Barnes, newly elected Lieutenant Governor, will be the featured speaker at a Newsmaker Luncheon, hosted jointly by the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com, on Thursday, February 7.

Barnes, a Milwaukee native, is a former Democratic legislator, having served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 2013 through 2017, representing District 11. While in the Assembly, he served on the Assembly Committees on Corrections, Education, Jobs & the Economy, and Small Business Development. He also was chairman of the Legislature’s Black and Latino Caucus and helped lead a number of international delegations to the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

In 2016, Barnes announced he would vacate his Assembly seat and launched an unsuccessful campaign against State Senator Lena Taylor in the Democratic primary to represent District 4.

A graduate of Milwaukee’s John Marshall High School, Barnes graduated from Alabama A & M University with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications. He later worked for several political campaigns and in the office of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, and as an organizer for M.I.C.A.H., a Milwaukee-based interfaith coalition that advocates for social justice. Barnes also worked as Deputy Director of Strategic Engagement for State Innovation Exchange, nonprofit progressive public policy organization established by the Center on Wisconsin Strategy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Barnes will take questions from a panel of journalists and from the audience at the luncheon, set for 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells St.

The panel of journalists:
Charles Benson – Anchor/reporter, TMJ4
