EAU CLAIRE, WI — Yesterday, State Senator Jeff Smith joined Citizen Action of Wisconsin, Dr. Rita Simon—a retired family physician, and Protect Our Care to call for President Donald J. Trump and Senate Republicans to act on the Lower Drug Prices Now Act (H.R. 3), which passed the U.S. House last week and would lower prescription drug costs Wisconsinites.

State Senator Jeff Smith reminded attendees that as recently as last year, President Trump told Wisconsinites at an event in Mosinee that he would address the rising cost of prescription drugs. Following passage of H.R. 3 last week, the President declared that he would veto the legislation.

“Democrats have kept their word and passed a bill that would benefit millions of Americans paying too much for prescription drugs,” said State Senator Jeff Smith. “President Trump has broken his promise. And Senate Republicans seem willing to let him get away with it.”

Retired family physician Dr. Rita Simon noted the crucial cost-saving measures included in the legislation, among them requiring the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to use their purchasing power to negotiate the cost of common prescription drugs. Simon praised Rep. Ron Kind for his support of the legislation.

“I’m so proud that our Congressman, Ron Kind, voted for this bill. This should not be a partisan issue — it is an easy solution to a problem that hurts so many Wisconsinites.”
