MADISON –Today, legislative Democrats joined Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul in support of legislation introduced by Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) that would create Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) in Wisconsin. ERPO laws provide families and law enforcement officers the tools they need to temporarily restrict an individual’s access to firearms if they pose a danger to themselves or others.

Representative Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) released the following statement in support:

“It is long past time for our state to take common sense measures to prevent the scourge of gun violence. The vast majority of Wisconsinites, including most gun owners, support ERPO laws. Unfortunately, legislative Republicans continue to stand in the way of common sense gun safety reform.

“In other states that have enacted ERPO legislation, firearm suicide rates and other extreme risk incidents have declined. I want everyone in Wisconsin to be able to live without the fear of losing a loved one to suicide by firearm and without the constant threat of gun violence.

“My Democratic colleagues and I stand ready to work with Governor Evers and Attorney General Kaul to crack down on gun violence and save lives. I call on legislative Republicans to stop obstructing this common sense reform.”
