WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mike Gallagher today released the following statement following the House Armed Services Committee markup for H.R. 2500, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (NDAA).

“While the NDAA has always included a robust debate, it has long enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support. Unfortunately, this year’s process broke with that tradition. The legislation that moved out of committee takes several steps backwards instead of continuing the progress of the past two years, and will need significant work in order to continue rebuilding our military and implementing the National Defense Strategy. I’m committed to engaging with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as this process moves forward, and I hope we can ultimately pass legislation that provides our men and women in uniform with the resources they need.”

The NDAA is the legislative vehicle that authorizes annual spending for the Department of Defense. This legislation passed out of committee on a near-party line vote of 33-24.
