Madison, WI – Representative Bob Kulp (R-Stratford) proudly presented the “First Responder of the Year” award to Joseph Mueller from the Central Fire & EMS District during the Assembly floor session on Thursday. He was honored along with more than 100 first responders from around the state in a first-of-its-kind recognition ceremony.

“Joe spends many hours at the fire station to complete the responsibilities that comes with the Chief’s job. The service Joe performs comes with many sacrifices such as sleepless nights, leaving family gatherings and missed meals. He delegates duties to members so there is comradery within the department.  Joe is very deserving of this award,” said Rep. Kulp

Wisconsin has approximately 9,400 career firefighters and 9,900 career EMS personnel along with 23,000 volunteer firefighters and EMS providers. There are also more than 13,700 law enforcement officers throughout the state.

“Wisconsin is stronger and safer because of these heroes,” Rep. Kulp said. “Their commitment to helping others is inspiring and this is just a small way we can show our gratitude for their service.”

The Assembly also took legislative action that showed members support for Wisconsin first responders. Senate Bill 266 that provides health insurance benefits to families of fallen officers received final legislative approval and now heads to the governor’s desk. The Assembly also passed a resolution to designate October 28th as First Responders Appreciation Day in Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin’s first responders deserve this special recognition; they’re the first people to arrive on the scene of an accident, medical emergency, fire or natural disaster,” said Rep. Kulp. “They run toward danger to help people in need and we are grateful for their service.”
