MADISON – State Representative Jessie Rodriguez, R-Oak Creek, issued the following statements after Gov. Tony Evers delivered the State of the State Address before a joint session of the Wisconsin State Legislature:

“The state of our state is strong because of Republican reforms and responsible budgeting. Our unemployment rate remains at a historic low – three percent, wages continue to rise, we have yet another surplus of nearly $600 million and our rainy day fund is still the largest in state history. Our economy is strong and Republican reforms have made that possible.

“Last session we made record investments in education, helped create more jobs and continued our efforts to reduce taxes. It is my hope the new governor will join Republicans in supporting these initiatives that have moved our state forward.

“This evening, I was pleased to hear that Gov. Evers shares similar priorities as Assembly Republicans; making sure our children receive a great education, improving access to healthcare, addressing our state’s transportation needs and providing a tax cut for the middle class.

“However, we have made it clear we will not support raising taxes on families in our communities. We agree the middle class deserves a tax cut but raising taxes on farmers, manufacturers and other hardworking families is not the way to do it. Assembly Republicans put forth a plan that uses the surplus Republicans created so that Gov. Evers can deliver on his promise to voters. With the surplus created by Republicans there is no reason to raise taxes on families in Wisconsin.

“I’m hopeful the governor will follow through with his message of bipartisanship. The voters chose divided government but not inaction. It is time for us to come together to address our challenges and continue moving Wisconsin in a positive direction.”
