MADISON – Following Governor Tony Evers’ inaugural budget address, Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) released the following statement:

“Tonight, Governor Evers delivered a vision for Wisconsin that clearly reflects the priorities and will of the voters. The People’s Budget prioritizes expanding access to healthcare and clean drinking water, investing in our kids and public education, and finding sustainable solutions for our crumbling roads. These are issues that folks from every corner of our state have been vocally advocating for.”

“I commend Governor Evers for not only declaring 2019 the ‘Year of Clean Drinking Water,’ but also for taking significant steps forward by introducing several initiatives in his budget to increase access to clean water. Everyone in Wisconsin should be able to drink clean water from their tap. It is exciting to see the governor placing an emphasis on the water quality issues affecting people throughout Wisconsin. I especially appreciate him recognizing the leadership and hard work of people in Central Wisconsin on this issue, like Nancy Turyk, and for including portions of my well compensation bill in the biennial budget.”

“Governor Evers has always said that what is best for our kids is what is best for Wisconsin, and I am excited to see historic increases in funding for Wisconsin’s K-12 and higher education systems in The People’s Budget. I appreciate the governor’s plans to fully fund our public schools, invest in our colleges and universities, and continue championing the Wisconsin Idea. The governor is also committed to expanding BadgerCare to provide quality, affordable healthcare to Wisconsinites while saving taxpayer money.”

“It is refreshing to see the will of the people reflected in the biennial budget. Governor Evers has provided us with a strong foundation, and I am hopeful that my colleagues and I can work together to bring the governor’s positive vision and comprehensive solutions forward.”
