MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed the 2019-21 state biennial budget into law with a series of partial vetoes. In response, Rep. Shankland said:
“Governor Evers led on Wisconsin values by introducing the People’s Budget. His budget reflected the voices and the will of the people of Wisconsin and strengthened our state’s healthcare, education, natural resources, and infrastructure. While Republican politicians chose to obstruct instead of working across the aisle, it’s notable that the governor made the best of the situation whenever possible, influencing their investments beyond Walker-era budget levels.
“While the Republican budget slashed Governor Evers’ priorities, from the Medicaid expansion to $72 million in clean water initiatives, I applaud the governor for using his constitutional veto authority to improve this budget and increase needed investments for the people of Wisconsin, including nearly $100 million more for our public school classrooms and additional funding for producer-led watershed grants to protect our water resources.”
“Governor Evers has shown that he is committed to doing what is best for the people of Wisconsin in every corner of this state. Obstructionist politicians cannot silence the will of the people, and I will continue working with the governor and my legislative colleagues to support public education at all levels, expand affordable health care, and invest in clean drinking water.”
