MADISON – State Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) released the following statement after Governor Evers vetoed funds in the budget to make vital repairs to the Kaukauna Veterans Memorial lift bridge:

“I am incredibly disappointed that Governor Evers has found a way to maneuver around what should have been a slam dunk for our community. Unfortunately, this shortsighted decision means the entirety of the cost for the lift bridge now sits squarely on the backs of Kaukauna taxpayers. Because of the governor’s actions, if no other solution is found, the average household in Kaukauna would be on the hook for an additional $267 through no fault of their own.

“Despite this disappointing setback, I remain committed to working with our young administration to see this project through. We can’t let partisan, political differences get in the way of doing what is right for the City of Kaukauna. I call on the governor and the Wisconsin DOT to meet with my office and local officials in Kaukauna in the coming days to find a path forward.”
