MADISON- Today, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) and Senator Patty Schachtner (D-Somerset) circulated a resolution today designating September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Rep. Subeck announced the resolution during a legislative advocacy day organized by the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA).
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecological cancers and is most common in postmenopausal women,” said Rep. Subeck. “It is often referred to as the ‘cancer that whispers’ because the symptoms are subtle and often overlooked making it difficult to diagnose.”
Ovarian cancer ranks tenth in rates of new cancer cases among women in the U.S., but ranks fifth among cancer deaths for women. Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless of age, heritage, or medical history. Women with a family history of ovarian cancer are at an even higher risk.
Rep. Subeck urged her legislative colleagues to sponsor the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month resolution to raise awareness of this deadly form of cancer. She is working closely with WOCA, whose mission is to provide education, support, and funding of research for ovarian cancer throughout Wisconsin. WOCA is a partner of the national Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.
“It is critical to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and support research and efforts for early detection,” said Rep. Subeck. “Too often, ovarian cancer goes undiagnosed until the disease has reached an advanced stage, at which point the cancer may have already spread to other parts of the body.”
