Proposal would provide Wisconsinites with $340 million in Tax Relief

Altoona – Rep. Rob Summerfield (R-Bloomer) joined other Eau Claire area legislators today in announcing a plan to reduce middle class taxes without raising taxes elsewhere. The proposal would leave Wisconsin’s Manufacturing and Agricultural Tax Credit in place and instead utilize the State’s $588.5 million budget surplus to increase tax-free income for individuals making less than $100,000 and families making $150,000 or less on their state tax returns. Following the announcement, Rep. Summerfield released this statement:

“Last week, Assembly Republicans sent a letter to Governor Evers outlining potential areas of bipartisan cooperation. Reducing the tax burden has been and will continue to be a priority for us, and Governor Evers has promised to address this issue as well.

However, his stated plan would raise taxes on farmers and businesses statewide. The Chippewa Valley is a hub for agriculture and manufacturing, so this would be an additional burden on my constituents.

Instead, I’m glad to stand with my colleagues today in finding common ground and offering a fiscally responsible solution that will offer a much-needed tax break for middle class Wisconsinites without harming our State’s agricultural or business communities.”
