Another Victory Declared for the People of Wisconsin, not Power Hungry Politicians
MADISON – Tuesday, March 26th, marked the second victory in the past week for the people of Wisconsin when Dane County Judge Frank Remington ruled in favor of Wisconsin union groups arguing that Speaker Robin Vos and Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald’s lame duck legislation violated the separation of powers enshrined in our state’s constitution. These lame duck bills, passed during an “Extraordinary Session” last December, included attempts to unconstitutionally consolidate Republican power into the Legislature while eroding the powers of the people’s newly elected Governor and Attorney Governor. In his decision, Judge Remington concluded, “In December, 2018 the Legislature and then Gov. Scott Walker upended the balance that this state has had for most all of its 171 years. The time has come to right this ship-of-state so Wisconsin can resume smooth sailing ahead.”
In response, Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“I am thrilled by the news that, for the second time in two weeks, Republican attacks on Democracy and fair government in Wisconsin have been thwarted,” said Rep. Taylor. “For 171 years, our state has flourished under the belief that government should be for the people of Wisconsin and by the people of Wisconsin. Yesterday’s ruling is just more evidence that it is going to take a lot more than 8 years of Republican divide and conquer tactics to silence the will of the people. Republicans may have won the battle in December, but Judge Remington’s ruling, along with the ruling last week by Judge Niess, is just more evidence that the people will win the war Vos and Fitzgerald have waged on our democracy.”
