MADISON – Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) issued the following statement regarding Governor Tony Evers’ first Budget Address:

“The Governor’s budget is a mirror image of his campaign that reflected the people’s priorities. We’re long overdue for a Wisconsin that works for everyone.

“These aren’t new problems, but Governor Evers is offering new solutions like $78 million for new broadband expansion efforts, two-thirds funding for public schools and using critical federal funds to expand Medicaid.

“Our middle class paid the way for corporations for far too long. The Family and Individual Reinvestment Credit is a blueprint for a responsible middle class tax cut with immediate relief and our future economy putting Wisconsin working families first.

“For years, Republicans kicked the can down the road when faced with tough choices like fixing our transportation infrastructure. I give Governor Evers credit for his commitment to solve the transportation crisis with a long term vision.”

“The Wisconsin people are eager for a new bipartisan approach – Republicans and Democrats need to find new ways to say ‘yes’ instead of old ways to say ‘no.’”

The 31st Senate District includes all of Buffalo and Pepin counties, portions of Trempealeau, Pierce, Dunn, Eau Claire, Chippewa and Jackson counties and very small portions of Chippewa and St. Croix counties.
