(MADISON) – Today, Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) in response to the special session to reduce gun violence called by Governor Evers, joined mothers, Wisconsinites, and her colleagues, in the Senate Chamber for prayer, and in the Senate Parlor for a press conference, since the Republicans refused to honor the Governor’s request. The session was framed around two legislative proposals (to address the expansion of background checks and a red flag law).
Despite the 94 other times in the state’s history that the legislature has met in special session, today the Republicans refused to show up for the people of Wisconsin on the issue of gun violence. Since they refused to debate their position, in special session, before the people of Wisconsin, Senator Lena Taylor issued the following statement:
“I agree that people have the right to carry, but the people also have the right to hear our debate on this difficult issue! Republicans held a special session in order to protect their power and strip the Governor and Attorney General of theirs. Come and debate a position, defend it before the people, and explain why you are willing to protect your power, but won’t protect our children and work on solutions to end gun violence.”
