Madison–State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), Co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance released the following statement:

“It’s disappointing that less than 24 hours after stepping into the East Wing of the Capitol,
Governor Evers is already drawing lines in the sand, prematurely ending his calls for unity. On one of the most important issues facing Wisconsin, Republicans in the legislature have been, and continue to be, ready to work in a bipartisan fashion to protect health care coverage for Wisconsinites. As we begin this session, the tone Governor Evers has exhibited towards Republican ideas is worrisome for bipartisanship.”

Earlier today, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Governor Evers, when asked about Republican efforts to protect health care coverage for individuals with preexisting conditions, said, “No matter what they pass, it’s still going to be insufficient.”

“Going on record stating that what the legislature passes to protect pre-existing conditions will be insufficient isn’t the step towards unity that the Governor called for yesterday. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I remain committed to working with the Governor and members of the legislature to address this important issue for all of Wisconsin.”
