MADISON – Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement to commend the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and partners for taking steps to mitigate the City of Madison’s current water crisis:

“Yesterday, we learned that four additional Madison wells have been found to have trace levels of toxic synthetic PFAS compounds. Without question, contaminants, including PFAS, PFOS, and many others dangerous compounds, can lead to devastating human health issues that affect some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals. These wells are crucial sources of water for Madison, and while the concentrations found were low level detections we must do everything in our power to stop these concentrations from rising. Water is life–ensuring that everyone has access to clean drinking water is vital, and we must do all we can to protect our community’s health, safety, and quality of life.

Today, the DNR announced their commitment to the City of Madison to review and analyze the sources of the contamination in Madison municipal wells 15 and 16. This pilot project includes funding to complete this review, along with a commitment to share the completed analysis with the city and the public. I commend them for their action and financial support, and am committed to continuing to work together to take steps to mitigate the effect that these harmful toxins have on our natural resources and our community, and to protect our kids, families, environment, and future.”
