MADISON – This week, Rep. Shankland (D-Stevens Point) was named Vice-Chair of the Speaker’s Task Force on Water Quality. Rep. Shankland will help lead the 16-member bipartisan committee consisting of legislators from the State Senate and Assembly. Rep. Shankland has demonstrated leadership and commitment to combating the water quality issues facing too many Wisconsinites, introducing legislation to provide immediate relief to homeowners with contaminated drinking water.

The task force will travel across the state to investigate the sources of groundwater and surface water contamination, hear from concerned stakeholders, and identify best practices for maintaining the health of Wisconsin’s water supply. Once their mission is complete, the task force will submit their findings and recommendations to the Speaker of the Assembly for reference in future legislative actions.

Rep. Shankland issued the following statement:

“It is an honor to be selected as Vice-Chair of the Water Quality Task Force, and I thank Speaker Vos and Minority Leader Hintz for their confidence in me. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with my colleagues to find meaningful science-based solutions to the water quality issues affecting people throughout Wisconsin.”

“This task force fits perfectly with Governor Evers’ declaration of 2019 as the ‘Year of Clean Drinking Water.’ Clean water is vital to our quality of life, and addressing the growing problem of contamination in Wisconsin’s water supplies must be a top priority for the Legislature this session and beyond. No one should have to buy bottled water, but with one in ten private wells contaminated in Wisconsin, that is often the reality. I am optimistic that we can work together to address this issue and build consensus toward preventative solutions so everyone can drink water from their taps in the future.”
