Madison, WI – State Representative Chuck Wichgers (R-Muskego) released the following statement on the appointment of Donald J. Hying as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Madison.
“Bishop Hying is an excellent choice to lead the faithful in Madison. I am thrilled that he will be coming back to his home state to bless us with his wisdom and lead us in our journey with Jesus Christ.
“I am fortunate to have known Bishop Hying since his early priesthood and I am confident he will carry on Bishop Morlino’s legacy. Bishop Morlino served Madison faithfully and was a strong voice for justice in Wisconsin.”
Pope Francis appointed Bishop Hying to replace Bishop Robert Morlino, who died suddenly on November 24, 2018 while undergoing medical tests. Bishop Hying currently serves as Bishop of Gary, Indiana, a position he has held since 2014. Previously, he served as the rector of St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee and auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee.
Bishop Hying was born in West Allis, WI. He received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette
University and his Master of Divinity from Saint Francis de Sales Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1989.
