WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) yesterday introduced H.R. 5369, the Supporting Mexico Against Corruption (SMAC) Act. This bill would combat corruption by requiring the President to impose Magnitsky Sanctions on individuals in the Mexican government that the U.S. Treasury Department has “credible evidence” engaged in corrupt activities outlined by the Global Magnitsky Act. Under the SMAC Act, the President would have 120 days to implement these sanctions. Click here for bill text.

“In light of recent cartel-related violence in Mexico, it is time for a maximum pressure campaign against the corruption that gives these criminal organizations safe harbor,” said Rep. Gallagher. “We must support those in the Mexican government who are committed to rooting out corruption.”

Background:

Since the enactment of the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act of 2017, the U.S. Department of Treasury has sanctioned four Mexican nationals, including a former Mexican government official, under the Act.
