WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, which will ensure the United States honors our commitments detailed in the Paris climate agreement, and take a bold first step to protect our planet by combatting climate change.
Rep. Ron Kind voted in support of the bill. His statement is below:
“Wisconsinites are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places in our country. It’s up to us to ensure our environment is protected for generations to come. I am proud to support the Climate Action Now Act, and reaffirm our National commitment to work with our global allies to combat climate change,” said Rep. Ron Kind.
In early November of 2016, the United States joined 174 countries in signing the Paris Agreement, drafted within the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) intended to collaboratively lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions and develop more sustainable practices for future generations on a global scale. In 2017, President Trump announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, making the United States the only country to reject the global pact.
The Climate Action Now Act would prohibit federal funds from being used to withdraw from the agreement, and would require the Administration to make a public plan to meet the pollution reduction goals agreed to in the Paris Agreement.
More than 2,000 businesses, 280 cities and counties and 23 states – including Wisconsin – have independently pledged to meet our commitment under the Paris climate agreement.
