MADISON, WI – You don’t have to wait for a drug-take-back day to get rid of your expired or no longer useful prescription medications.

UW Health Pharmacy Services is sponsoring five consumer drug-take-back receptacles in UW Health buildings.

“Our goal is to protect the environment and combat the opioid epidemic,” said Trisha Ludwig, pharmacy manager at The American Center.

The first receptacle was placed at UW Health at The American Center as a pilot project. Now the program is being expanded to four other pharmacies, including those at University Hospital, West Clinic on Junction Road, Union Corners on Winnebago Street and the Arboretum Clinic on Park Street. All the drug receptacles are in the pharmacies of the hospital and clinics.

“This initiative aligns with the new Food and Drug Administration ‘Remove the Risk’ campaign that focuses on communicating the need for safe disposal of prescription opioids to reduce the chance of accidental or intentional misuse of opioids, “said Melissa Ngo, manager of the UW Health community pharmacy program.

Some drugs and medical equipment will not be accepted including Schedule I controlled substances, illicit drugs, inhalers, aerosol cans, needles, thermometers and lotions and liquids.
