MADISON, WISCONSIN – In an interview published on Wednesday, Wisconsin Governor-elect Tony Evers told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he planned to include provisions restoring access to driver licenses and in-state college tuition for Wisconsin immigrant families in his proposed 2019-2021 state budget. Voces de la Frontera issued the following response:

“We applaud Governor-elect Evers for standing with immigrant communities and fighting for working-class Wisconsin families through his proposed budget,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “Restoring in-state tuition and driver licenses for Wisconsin immigrant families will strengthen the economy, improve public safety, and keep families together. Right now, ICE is targeting Wisconsin residents stopped for driving without a license for deportation and separation from their families. Restoring driver licenses will help keep Wisconsin families together. Immigrant workers make critical contributions to Wisconsin’s economy as taxpayers, workers, and consumers, especially in our signature dairy industry. Restoring in-state tuition for immigrant youth will expand opportunities for working class young people to attend college and contribute to their families and communities. We urge Republican leaders in the legislature to support these provisions in the state budget. Voces de la Frontera is committed to engaging voters from both parties across the state to support these proposals, which will only strengthen Wisconsin.”

On Monday, January 7th, Voces de la Frontera will hold a celebratory rally outside of Governor-elect Evers’ inauguration starting at 9am at the Wisconsin State Capitol, to support Governor-elect Evers and urge legislators to pass his proposed budget, including driver licenses and in-state tuition.
