Motorists are reminded to be alert and drive with caution through all work zones

Work is underway to reconstruct and expand Interstate 39/90 from Kennedy Road near Janesville to Knutson Road, just south of the Rock River bridges near Newville in Rock County. In preparation for the Interstate expansion, temporary widening work will occur on I-39/90 southbound from Townline Road to Kennedy Road in Janesville.

In early June, all I-39/90 traffic will be shifted onto the northbound side, between Townline Road and the Rock River bridges, as crews reconstruct and expand the southbound Interstate. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction, with northbound and southbound traffic separated by a median barrier wall. In spring 2020, all Interstate traffic will shift onto the new concrete pavement on I-39/90 southbound to accommodate the northbound expansion.

In conjunction with the Interstate expansion, crews will widen four southbound Interstate bridges spanning Newville Road; County M; Wisconsin & Southern Railroad crossing and Townline Road. Due to the bridge widening work, Newville Road under I-39/90 is scheduled to be closed from mid-June to late July 2019. County M under the Interstate is scheduled to be closed beginning in mid-June to late July 2019. Townline Road under I-39/90 is anticipated to be closed from early July until mid-August 2019. Motorists must use alternate local routes. The signed detour for County M will use WIS 59 and US 51. It is important to note the dates listed are approximate timeframes and these roadways will not be closed at the same time. The closures are weather-permitting and subject to change. Similar closures will occur in 2020 for the I-39/90 northbound bridges over the roadways.

I-39/90 remains open to two lanes in each direction during peak travel times. Nightly single lane closures will occur on the Interstate weeknights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. within the construction project limits. All lane restrictions and work operations are weather dependent and subject to change. Motorists are reminded to be alert and drive with caution in all work zones.

The $65.5 million project is expected to be completed in November 2020.
