“Truth Is Marching”: Honoring Women As Pioneers, Change Makers And Innovators

Madison, Wis. – Wisconsin celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. live from the Capitol Rotunda in Madison, Jan. 21 at noon. Produced, directed and hosted by Wisconsin Public Radio’s (WPR) Dr. Jonathan Overby, the 39th annual official state ceremony is the oldest state celebration in the country. “By design, this year’s event will honor women from various backgrounds in recognition of their historical role as pioneers, change makers and innovators in today’s world, and as leaders and champions of a better tomorrow,” said Overby.

Peabody and Emmy Award winning director, writer and producer Rita Coburn Whack will deliver the keynote address. Coburn Whack’s work includes the documentary “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise,” which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and won the Peabody Award in 2017. She also produced segments for the Oprah Winfrey Show and Oprah Radio. Today, Coburn Whack is CEO of RCW Media Productions in Chicago.

Joining Coburn Whack on the platform will be Governor Tony Evers, the MLK Women’s Mass Choir, The Victory Travelers Gospel Group, Highland Pipers and pianist Becca May Grant.

The MLK Tribute & Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda is free and open to the public with limited seating and standing. People throughout the state can listen live on all WPR stations and at wpr.org. Wisconsin Public Television’s (WPT) Wisconsin Channel and wpt.org will also air the program live. A one-hour highlights broadcast airs on WPT at 9:30 p.m. on the same day.
