MADISON, Wis. — By a 4-3 decision in a lawsuit brought by state legislative Republicans, the conservative-controlled Wisconsin State Supreme Court struck down “Safer At Home” measures implemented by Governor Tony Evers’ administration to protect public health and Wisconsin families in the face of the COVID-19 global health pandemic.

The following are the statements of A Better Wisconsin Together Deputy Director Mike Browne:

“We hope the Republicans controlling the state legislature will show more urgency now than when they previously failed to act in a timely manner to address the COVID-19 crisis, unnecessarily costing Wisconsin families $25 million in federal unemployment insurance funding.

“This time it’s more than just money, it’s people’s health, safety and lives at stake.

“Wisconsin is still under threat and urgent action is required so the progress we have all sacrificed to make in fighting COVID-19 is not lost.

“The Republican-controlled legislature brought this lawsuit, the result of which puts them at the center of the state response to a global health pandemic. Their job going forward is not to criticize or second guess actions taken by others, it is to act quickly to protect the health and safety of our communities.”

“Governor Evers has effectively steered Wisconsin to get ahead of the disease and laid out a clear plan on how to move forward. Lawsuits by the Republican legislature, partisan decisions by the politicized court and rallies supported by heavily armed extremists that continue to try to get in the way of the sensible plan laid out by Governor Evers.

“Wisconsin just met five of six benchmarks laid out by the Governor’s administration toward further re-opening the state. Republicans playing politics threatens to undermine our progress.

“That is why Wisconsinites favor the scientific, measured approach of Governor Evers by a nearly two to one ratio over the political games of Robin Vos, Scott Fitzgerald and Wisconsin Republicans.”
