Today, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tammy Baldwin will launch a Wisconsin Biden for President virtual “Made in America” tour with stops in Kenosha and Superior, Wisconsin. Senators Klobuchar and Baldwin will discuss Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan to revitalize manufacturing in Wisconsin and across the country and how Biden will create millions of new manufacturing and innovation jobs.

“Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Wisconsin manufacturing was in a recession due to Donald Trump’s trade war and misplaced priorities. His horrible handling of the COVID-19 crisis has made things much worse for many Wisconsin workers,” Senator Baldwin said in her announcement of the tour. “Instead of fighting for our Wisconsin manufacturers, Trump gave massive tax cuts to billionaires and even gave incentives for corporations to ship jobs overseas. Joe Biden has a plan to invest in American workers and create good-paying jobs right here in Wisconsin — and I look forward to carrying that message across the Badger State.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has hit our community and businesses hard. It’s frustrating to know that it didn’t have to be this way. While we can’t blame Trump for the virus itself, it’s clear that his slow response and refusal to take decisive action has cost Wisconsinites countless lives and jobs,” said Tod Ohnstad, State Representative from Kenosha and a former autoworker.

Even before COVID-19, Wisconsin manufacturing was on the decline. While Trump campaigned throughout 2016 on claims that he would revive the Badger State’s manufacturing industry, many of those promises have gone unfulfilled.

Wisconsin manufacturers have also been negatively impacted by Trump’s failure to respond to the pandemic, with a recent survey finding that 75% have taken a financial blow from the pandemic. Since March, numerous major manufacturing employers have closed their doors or filed for bankruptcy, putting many Wisconsinites out of work.

Manufacturing represents one of Wisconsin’s largest economic sectors, and as of 2017, Wisconsin had more than 9,400 manufacturers supporting 475,000 jobs.

The “Made in America” tour will also include local elected officials and workers impacted by Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus and economic policies that prioritized the wealthy and well connected over workers.
