Today, Wisconsin veterans responded to President Trump’s shameful commentsΒ reportedΒ byΒ The AtlanticΒ about the heroic men and women who have lost their lives in service to this country.

Their comments come after Vice President Biden spoke about the reporting in aΒ speechΒ last week, saying: β€œPresident Trump has demonstrated that he has no sense of service, no loyalty to any cause other than himself. If I have the honor of being the next Commander in Chief, I will ensure that our American heroes know that I’ll have their backs, honor their sacrifice, and those that have been injured will be in military parades.”

UpNorthNews:Β Wisconsin Vets Sound Off on Trumps’ β€˜Losers’ and β€˜Suckers’ Comments

When news broke Thursday that President Donald Trump had referred to members of the military killed in combat as β€œlosers” and β€œsuckers,” Army veteran David Boetcher of Waunakee thought Trump’s comments were pretty much par for the course.

β€œThree years ago I would have been shocked,” said Boetcher, who served in the Gulf War and was deployed to Iraq. β€œI was stunned by how he acted and what he said about John McCain when he died. I’m not stunned anymore, just disappointed.”

Trump did not attend McCain’s funeral and lowered the White House flag to half-staff afterΒ mounting criticism of how he was responding to McCain’s deathΒ in August of 2018.
Boetcher, 57, retired 10 years ago from the Wisconsin National Guard. He works as an electrician and is a Waunakee School Board member.

β€œHe’s got a track record, now,” Boetcher told UpNorthNews Tuesday. β€œIt is still incredibly disappointing. You can feel how you feel about the military. The fact you are that mean-spirited about it just takes it to a whole new level.”

Boetcher is not the only Wisconsin veteran speaking out against Trump’s recently detailed words and actions documented in TheΒ AtlanticΒ magazine article. Other media outlets have confirmed details of the in-depth story. On Saturday,Β Trump called on Fox News to fire its reporterΒ whose sources corroborated parts of The Atlantic story.
Randy Hoelzen, an Army combat veteran who lives in West Salem, said he is disgusted by President Trump’s reported actions and comments.

β€œI am so tired of the narcissism of this president who cannot comprehend why our soldiers are willing to make life changing and sometimes life ending sacrifices in the service of our country,” Hoelzen said in a statement. β€œHis words are inexcusable for a Commander in Chief. If President Trump is looking to describe a β€˜loser,’ he should look in the mirror.”

Gary Hawley, a Coast Guard veteran from Stevens Point, said the β€œdamning report makes clear that Donald Trump does not respect or understand military service.”

β€œThe brave men and women in uniform who lost their lives serving this country are certainly no β€˜losers’ or β€˜suckers,’ they’re American heroes” Hawley said. β€œAs the father of a service member, Joe Biden knows personally just how shameful and offensive these comments are from President Trump.”

More reactions from Wisconsin veterans:

β€œI have seen firsthand the courage and sacrifice of our service members overseas. So many of the guys I fought alongside with in Vietnam never made it home–they served this country with honor,” saidΒ Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Roger Quindel, a Milwaukee resident. β€œTo be so disrespectful to people who have given so much to this country is an absolute abomination. I can’t believe any leader in the world would talk about the men and women in their military in this way, let alone the President of the United States. Our military and our veterans deserve better than Donald Trump.”

β€œI’m deeply disappointed, but unfortunately not surprised, to see these comments from this President. Time and time again, Donald Trump has put his own interests ahead of our troops” saidΒ Army veteran, David Boetcher, a Waunakee resident. β€œIn smearing the memory of these heroic men and women, Donald Trump is showing once again that he does not deserve the title of Commander in Chief. Our military members have sacrificed so much for our country, they deserve better than the dismissive disdain Donald Trump keeps showing them. It is important as ever that we elect Joe Biden this November.”
