GOP state Sen. Dave Craig, of Big Bend, announced today he won’t seek reelection this fall, saying he and his family “need a break from public life.”

Craig, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and a real estate agent, was elected to the Assembly in a May 2011 special election. He then won his Senate seat in 2016.

He and his wife have six children, and he said “family is always the first consideration.”

“An additional commitment of another term of service is not in our family’s interest,” Craig said.

His announcement comes just ahead of Friday’s deadline for incumbents to file their notices of noncandidacy.

He is the seventh member of the Senate to opt against running again this fall, joining fellow Republicans Luther Olsen, of Ripon, and Tom Tiffany, who won the 7th CD in a special election. The Dems who aren’t running again are: Dave Hansen, of Green Bay; Mark Miller, of Monona; Fred Risser, of Madison; and Jennifer Shilling, of La Crosse.
