MADISON, Wis. – The Fall issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources overflows with information about the state’s beautiful outdoors, including extended hunting coverage, recycling milestones, bird conservation news and a special section on lakes and their aquatic plant habitats. The DNR’s quarterly magazine reaches readers this week.
Wisconsin’s hunting traditions set the tone for autumn in a cover story featuring the voices of women in the hunting community. Women at the DNR and beyond, from novices to lifelong hunters, speak eloquently about what hunting means to them.
Bird lovers will find plenty to enjoy about this issue with several stories on conservation concerns, key partnership successes, birding news and simple ways to help birds. There also are details on a nesting box program that has aided North America’s smallest raptor, the American kestrel.
“Run for the record books” tells the tale of ultrarunner Coree Woltering, an Ice Age Trail “thousand-miler” who recently set a new fastest known time for completing the national scenic trail. The story teases to an interview with Woltering that soon will be available on the DNR’s podcast, “Wild Wisconsin: Off the Record.”
This year marks the 30th anniversary for Wisconsin’s recycling law and 10 years for the e-cycling law, and stories in the magazine celebrate both occasions. A pull-out card offers recycling and e-cycling tips.
Another bonus feature is the 16-page full-color special section from the DNR’s Aquatic Plant Management program, diving into the underwater world of Wisconsin’s lakes.
Regular features include “Your Outdoors,” about a hunter who finds himself surprisingly cozy with a ruffed grouse; “Outside in Wisconsin,” spotlighting Crex Meadows Wildlife Area; and Kyle Cherek’s “Taste of Wisconsin” column highlighting honey bees and their sweet rewards.
DNR Secretary Preston D. Cole’s column offers readers a message of thanks, crediting Wisconsinites for their resolve and resiliency in dealing with “the unprecedented times of COVID-19.” Fall, he notes, brings great opportunities to enjoy hunting, explore state parks and head outside for other activities. “Thanks to all who have found solace in our great outdoors,” he writes.
