MADISON – BREAKING: Nada Elmikashfi receives the endorsement of United States Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-5).

Rep. Omar has been a shining light for bold progressive values in the Midwest and her endorsement of Elmikashfi highlights the working-class and progressive values that are front and center in Elmikashfi’s campaign.

Rep. Omar and Elmikashfi’s similar paths emphasize that there is a home for diverse representation in government. Both Rep. Omar and Elmikashfi immigrated to the United States while growing up, and both have been groundbreakers in their historic candidacies.

In 2018, Rep. Omar was the first naturalized-citizen of African birth to represent Minnesota and one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress. Elmikashfi would be the first African immigrant and the first Muslim to ever serve in the Wisconsin Legislature.

Most importantly, both Rep. Omar and Elmikashfi have built historic coalitions in their attempts to fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice. They have each given hope to the progressive movement in the Midwest.

“Our hope for the future is being built on tenacity, compassion, & courage—we’ve seen that hope embodied by Rep. Ilhan Omar,” said Elmikashfi in a tweet on Saturday morning. “I am honored to announce her endorsement. Rep. Omar has fought for progress in Congress. We will do the same in Wisconsin.”

The progressive movement continues to consolidate around Elmikashfi’s bid for the state Senate. Rep. Omar’s endorsement is the latest to join a diverse and historic coalition that includes the Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, Voces de la Frontera, Democratic Socialists of America, Madison Teachers Incorporated, American Federation of Teachers – Wisconsin, Sunrise – Madison, and many more.x
