Washington, D.C. — Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, released the following statement on Judge Jill Karofsky winning a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court:

I want to congratulate Judge Jill Karofsky for a well-deserved victory that will place her on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court. She is extremely qualified and will serve with distinction.

“Although the results of this election have now been released, the people of Wisconsin should not forget what happened last week. By refusing to move the election or provide adequate alternative voting options as people dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature used their gerrymandered majorities to force an almost impossible choice on the people they are supposed to represent: forgo your civic responsibility and stay healthy or cast a ballot and endanger yourself and your community. Republicans’ brazen attempt to steal a seat on the Supreme Court may not have worked, but it still endangered the health and well-being of people across Wisconsin and voters should not forget it when they cast a ballot this November.

“The troubling pictures from Wisconsin last week should serve as a cautionary tale that must not be repeated later this year. Political leaders in Congress and at the state level need to start taking steps right now to ensure that no other voters around the country are forced into a choice between staying healthy or casting a ballot.”
