Dem state Sen. Dave Hansen announced today that he will not seek reelection this fall.

Hansen 72, has regularly outperformed the top of the ticket since he was first elected to the Green Bay-area district in 2000, and his retirement improves GOP chances of winning the seat. Republicans head into the fall elections with a 19-14 majority.

Hansen won reelection in 2016 with 51.3 percent of the vote even as Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton by more than 10 points in the district. Trump took the seat with 52.1 percent of the vote.

Republican Eric Wimberger, who lost to Hansen in 2016, has already filed to seek the seat again. Prior to Hansen’s announcement, Republicans said they expected other possible candidates to look at a run as well.
