New Glarus, WI. – The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the First and Second Street Residential Historic District (New Glarus, Green County) on the State Register of Historic Places on November 20, 2020.
The First and Second Street Residential Historic District includes a range of residential architectural styles popular during its period of development between 1880 and 1955. The district conveys a sense of historical and architectural cohesiveness through its designs of 60 homes, fine examples of popular architectural styles including Queen Anne, Craftsman, Bungalow, and Colonial Revival styles; popular vernacular housing types are also represented in the district. Collectively, these buildings reflect national trends in domestic architecture and typify the stylistic and historic evolution of the district itself and of the larger residential area that surrounds it. The district is also noteworthy for the number of homes designed and built by local master builder, Oswald Altman. The homes within the Historic District are well maintained, resulting in a district of distinction and beauty.
The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
