Neenah, Wis. (April 15, 2020) – Longtime Neenah resident and Neenah Joint School District board member Lauri Asbury has announced her candidacy for the Wisconsin State Assembly’s 55th District. The seat is currently held by Mike Rohrkaste, who has announced he will not seek re-election. Asbury’s campaign platforms draw on her extensive education experience and community involvement.

During these unprecedented times, state elected officials are not able to campaign in traditional ways such as going door-to-door for campaign signatures. Asbury is asking for nomination signatures by downloading a nomination form from her website at asburyforassembly.com or requesting a no contact front porch drop-off and pick-up.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is showing the true impact lawmakers have on our lives and how government will impact the speed and degree of our economic recovery,” Asbury said. “As a fiscally responsible conservative, I fully support the state’s approved COVID-19 relief bill and will advocate on your behalf in Madison to make sure we emerge from this trying time better than ever. I will make sure fiscally responsible policies are implemented to support a rapid economic recovery. Now more than ever is the time when we all need to work together. It will also be imperative that we have the right policy in place to ensure functional responsive government in times of emergency, including adequate planning and preparedness, and strong legislation that allows continuity of state government and local leadership.”

In addition to COVID-19 recovery efforts, Asbury also pledges to:

  • Move families forward: Asbury will continue to move families and communities forward through strong leadership and legislation that supports workforce and economic development, conservative fiscal responsibility, and a high quality education for all Wisconsin students. Asbury recognizes that during this time, more than ever, we must have the ability to identify and create jobs, and have the appropriate training and education systems in place to support community members. Most importantly, Asbury wants families to be able to keep more of their hard earned money through economic recovery, tax reform, and relief.
  • Ensure goal-orientated education: Asbury will ensure that education meets the needs of the individual and the needs of the local economy. As a school Board Member for the Neenah Joint School District, Asbury has supported cutting-edge programs including digital learning and the infrastructure necessary for all student access, incorporating real world experiences for students with internships, industry credentials, and dual credit classes to prepare for career, technical college or university.
  • Mental Health and Wellness: Asbury will make Mental Health a primary focus during these uncertain times. Mental health is one of the most important issues facing our communities as together we navigate the uncertainty of the coronavirus impact. Economic issues, social distancing, and increases in anxiety all take a toll. During Asbury’s time as a Neenah school Board Member she has supported advances in mental health programming including establishing one of the first K-12 Mental Health Coordinators in the state, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) training for staff, addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) so kids are able to be successful in school, anti-bullying curriculum expansion enhancing relationships and school safety, and by making peer-mentor suicide prevention programs like Sources-of-Strength available to students. As a board of directors member at Samaritan Counseling, Asbury has also supported the extension of counseling to be delivered via tele-health and tele-counseling methods to increase access during these times of digital learning, social distancing, and safer at home measures.

“Lauri has shown that she has the proven leadership skills and experience to work collaboratively to get things done for the good of our entire community,” Penny Miller, Senior Associate and Pinnacle Member and realtor for the Fox Cities area, said. “She listens, is responsive, and has a vision for education and economic development that will help move our communities forward. I encourage you to visit her website and sign her nomination paper at asburyforassembly.com.”

In addition to Asbury’s board commitment to the Neenah Joint School District, Asbury also dedicates her time as an active Board of Directors member for Samaritan Counseling Center of the Fox Valley, a member of the Neenah Arts Council, a Sustaining member for Neenah-Menasha Emergency Society, a member of Tuesday Club of Neenah and a participant of Non-Profit Leadership Initiative.
