Milwaukee, Dec. 2, 2020 – The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has announced Robert Gouthro, MD, as the new residency training director for the MCW-Central Wisconsin Psychiatry Residency Program in Wausau, Wisconsin. Dr. Gouthro officially began this role Oct. 1, 2020, replacing Edward Krall, MD, who had served since the training program opened in 2016.

Dr. Gouthro completed both his medical school and residency training at the MCW. Since completing his residency in 2011, he has focused on medical education in northeastern Wisconsin and continues to work with medical learners from multiple disciplines, including psychiatry residents, medical students, physician assistant students and residents and pharmacy residents. Dr. Gouthro also helped build and has managed MCW’s similar psychiatry residency program in Green Bay since its opening in 2010.

While in Green Bay, Dr. Gouthro worked with community-based organizations such as the Jackie Nitschke Center, Family Services, St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Police Department on addiction consultation, patient care and educational activities aimed at improving the psychiatric health of the region. Along with a team of community-minded individuals, Dr. Gouthro established a nonprofit, free mental health clinic for the underserved of Brown County.

With a strong belief that physicians should place a significant focus on their own well-being in addition to community wellnes, Dr. Gouthro established a Promotion of Mental Wellness Award, which is provided to graduating MCW-Green Bay students that have exemplified this belief.

Dr. Gouthro has been awarded the MCW Department of Psychiatry’s Health Outreach Partnering and Education Initiative award, the Charles E. Kubly Community Engagement Award, and the Health Care Heroes Award in the Behavioral Health category by the BizTimes media.

In 2019, Dr. Gouthro accepted the Chief Medical Officer position at North Central Health Care, a key partner for the MCW-Central Wisconsin Residency Training Program. He will continue in this position in addition to his role as psychiatry residency training director.
