MILWAUKEE – Tommy G. Thompson, interim president of the University of Wisconsin System and former governor, will be the featured guest at a virtual event set for noon on Friday, August 21. This Newsmaker Lunch Hour is presented by a partnership between the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com.

Thompson, a Republican who is Wisconsin’s longest-serving governor, in June was named interim president of the University of Wisconsin System after the lone finalist to replace outgoing president Ray Cross withdrew from consideration. Thompson’s term will last for at least a year, after which there will be a new search for a permanent president for the UW System, which serves about 170,000 students.

Since his appointment, Thompson has focused on students’ return to campus for the fall semester, including a comprehensive COVID-19 testing program. He also announced a series of administrative cost savings and a new Wisconsin Regents Opportunity Scholarship for underserved and underrepresented students.

A native of Elroy, Wisconsin and long-time state legislator, Thompson was elected governor in 1986 and re-elected an unprecedented three times, serving until February 2001, when he resigned to become U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush.

After leaving HHS in 2005, Thompson was a senior partner at a Washington, D.C. law firm and served on numerous corporate boards. He currently is Chairman and CEO of Thompson Holdings, which focuses on developing innovative solutions to health care challenges facing the nation.

Thompson will field questions from a panel of journalists from noon to 1 p.m., moderated by Milwaukee Press Club President Gene Mueller, host of Wisconsin’s Morning News at News Radio 620 WTMJ.
