Madison, WI- Representative Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma) issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Evers’ issuance of Executive Order #82, declaring another 60-day public health emergency, and Emergency Order #1, ordering a statewide mask mandate:

“I am vehemently opposed to Governor Evers’ latest preposterous overreach. A statewide mandate is not only unnecessary, but something that just last week the Governor himself acknowledged he likely didn’t have the authority to pursue. I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation from him on this drastic policy change.

When I became a State Representative, I swore an oath to protect the constitution of our great state and to fulfill the duties of my office to the best of my ability. My primary duty is to serve as the voice of my district and over the last several days, I have heard their cry, loudly and clearly. I have heard from the elderly who don’t want this. I have heard from nurses who don’t want this. I have heard from parents who don’t want this. I have heard from law enforcement officers who don’t want this. I have heard from small business owners who don’t want this. Our district does not want this order.

In order to appease his base, Governor Evers is trampling on our district once again and shackling us to the situations hundreds of miles away in Madison and Milwaukee. For too long, our district’s voice has fallen on deaf ears in this administration. I am calling for the Legislature to convene and pass a joint resolution ending this mandate and the new emergency order. This method of running the state through unilateral orders needs to stop, and I’m disappointed Governor Evers continues to put outside special interests before his northern constituency.”
