(Madison) – Following Governor Evers’ 2020 State of the State address this evening, State Representative Gary Hebl (D-Sun Prairie) released the following statement:

I was encouraged by the bold stances Governor Evers took in his second State of the State tonight. He set forth a clear agenda of working together, with both Republicans and Democrats, to pass legislation that is supported by large majorities throughout Wisconsin. It is refreshing to have an executive leading our state that wants to reach across the aisle instead of treating the other party as a mere obstacle to bypass.

There has been some good progress since Gov. Evers was sworn in. However, there is so much more to be done to move the state forward and to have the legislature truly reflect what the people of Wisconsin want. Democrats have been willing to work toward a compromise. We just need to start to get our colleagues on the other side of the aisle ready to work toward a common goal.

Unfortunately, under their current leadership, Republicans appear to be satisfied grinding the wheels of the legislature to an excruciatingly slow pace, apparently in an effort to deny Gov. Evers any signature policy achievements before the next election- 33 months away. That is no way to govern. We must prioritize the people of Wisconsin before electoral advantages.  We need to work together to find solutions for Wisconsin farmers, close tax loopholes for wealthy companies, ensure affordable health care solutions, sufficiently fund education, and finally solve the problem of contaminated drinking water. There are solutions out there. It shouldn’t matter who gets credit for what, as long as the net results is a positive outcome for the people of Wisconsin.

I look forward to what 2020 brings and remain optimistic that Governor Evers will be able to affect positive change for Wisconsin.
