MADISON – Today, Republicans refused to take action on Governor Evers special session on justice reform and policing. Representative Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) released the following statement on the Republican’s failure to govern:
“This week, Governor Evers called for a special session to take up legislation on policing accountability and transparency. My Democratic colleagues and I showed up at the Capitol, ready to take action but the majority party failed to do their job. My Republican colleagues think this is a paid vacation at a time when our state is hurting from the tragedy and violence in Kenosha.
“This session, Assembly Democrats introduced proactive proposals aimed at addressing inequities in our current system. These bills address the root issues we must take on in order to make real change. We are ready to pass these proposals and deliver on long overdue reform for our community. I call on my Republican colleagues to show up and do the work they were elected to do.
“Wisconsin Republicans have not shown up for work in 138 days. Our state facing a pandemic, economic uncertainty, and civil unrest due to the continued inequities we witness on a daily basis. A task force is an excuse for their continued inaction. It’s clear that Republicans have simply given up on governing.”
