MADISON – Today, Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) joined a growing list of co-sponsors for legislation to create a Vote by Mail system for the remainder of Wisconsin’s 2020 elections. Wisconsin’s “Pandemic Primary” on April 7th left tens of thousands of people disenfranchised and forced voters to risk their health at polling places around the state.

Mail voting is becoming increasingly popular around the country, including five states that now mail ballots to every voter in their state, and many others that have taken steps to maximize ballot access for voters. Moving to a planned mail-only voting system for the remainder of 2020 would allow Wisconsinites to safely exercise their right to vote and adhere to the Safer at Home order, while allowing our election officials time and resources to safely administer our elections. Representative Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement after signing on to this important legislation:

“It is critically important that we act to prevent another election like the one we saw on Tuesday,” Neubauer said. “If we don’t act now, people will be faced with the impossible choice of risking their health or giving up their right to vote during this public health crisis. When something as fundamental as voting is on the line we can, and must, move quickly. It’s time to take up this Vote by Mail legislation in an urgent, bipartisan manner.”

“Moving to a Vote by Mail system for the rest of the year will provide voters with a safe way to cast their ballot and provide state and local officials time to plan and execute a safe and secure election,” Rep. Neubauer continued. “While we are navigating a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we protect our democracy and the right to vote.”
