MADISON– Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement announcing the endorsement of Frances Huntley-Cooper, for her candidacy for Wisconsin’s 16th Senate District:
“Today I have the privilege to announce an endorsement from the former Mayor of Fitchburg, Frances Huntley-Cooper,” said Sargent. “Frances’ work and dedication to the Fitchburg community, and Dane County as a whole, has been a great inspiration,” Sargent continued.
Frances Huntley-Cooper currently serves as a Member of the Board of Trustees for Madison College. Prior to her service for the Board, Huntley-Cooper was the Mayor of Fitchburg from 1991 to 1993– she is Wisconsin’s first and only African American mayor elected to office. In 2008, Huntley-Cooper was elected as a Barack Obama delegate in the Democratic Convention in Denver, Colorado. Huntley-Cooper also served five years as president of the Madison branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) amongst numerous other community service roles. In addition to her many career achievements, Huntley-Cooper has dedicated her time to working in social services, directly impacting the lives of countless Wisconsin children and families. Huntley-Cooper has been a champion of progressive politics, working diligently for equality and underserved populations.
“Melissa Sargent has fought tirelessly for progressive reforms and promoting inclusivity during her time as a state representative, and I have no doubt that she will continue her excellent work in the Wisconsin State Senate,” said Huntley-Cooper. “Melissa has strengthened Dane County by being an advocate for the betterment of all people. Her ability to lift up and value the voices of marginalized people makes her the right choice for Fitchburg, and the entirety of the 16th Senate District. Melissa is truly working for all of us, and I am proud to endorse Melissa Sargent as our next State Senator.”
