MADISON – Today, Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) announced that she has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to county issues by receiving a Wisconsin Counties Association Outstanding Legislator Award for the 2019-20 biennium. The Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA) represents and serves Wisconsin’s 72 counties and their county governments.

“Representative Shankland worked diligently for counties this past session and we are grateful for her work and vision for the taxpayers of our state,” said WCA Executive Director Mark D. O’Connell. “We are proud to present her with this award and her dedication to effective governing goes beyond the confines of Assembly District 71, with an impact felt in all 72 Wisconsin counties.”

In response, Rep. Shankland released the following statement:

“I’m honored to be named an Outstanding Legislator by the Wisconsin Counties Association. I have always enjoyed working with WCA on legislation to support local governments. As a strong advocate for local control and supporting our local governments, I am particularly proud of working with them to introduce and pass bipartisan legislation into law this session.

“After Portage County faced many hurdles with the state’s outdated referendum law, I worked with the Wisconsin Counties Association and other local government groups to introduce and pass 2019 Wisconsin Act 126. This new law streamlined the process for local governments to hold a referendum, while incentivizing that these elections be held during general elections instead of costly special elections, saving taxpayer money in the process. Working together to get results for our community at the Capitol has been truly meaningful. I deeply appreciate this recognition and the work that the Wisconsin Counties Association does to elevate the voices of our counties.”
