MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly will Sam Floyd from Campbellsport, Wisconsin as a “Hometown Hero” at the upcoming Assembly session on January 21st.
Floyd, who was nominated by his State Representative, Tim Ramthun (R-Campbellsport), served in the United States Marine Corps from 2002-2006 with a deployment to Afghanistan. Upon returning home, Floyd struggled with adjusting back to civilian life, as many veterans do. As Floyd began losing veteran friends to suicide, he decided to start Operation Coffee, a coffee roasting business that gives 10% of every sale to organizations that support ending veteran suicide.
“Sam is already a hero for putting his life on the line to keep our country safe; I’m proud to say he’s also an Assembly Hometown Hero for giving back to his fellow veterans and community upon returning safely home,” said Assembly Majority leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna), who selected Floyd for the award. “I would like to thank Sam not only for his service to our country, but for his determination to do something to combat veteran suicide in our communities.”
Since beginning Operation Coffee, Floyd has been able to donate over $6,000 to organizations that work to end veteran suicide. Additionally, he travels the country, talking to veterans who are facing similar struggles and raising awareness for veteran suicide.
“I met with Sam in person back in November to hear his tremendous story, and I was deeply moved,” said Rep. Ramthun. “His selflessness, humility, and focus on helping those in most need of help is clearly evident to all who meet him. He truly embodies what it means to be a hero.”
The Wisconsin State Assembly sees giving back to the community as one of the most valuable characteristics one can have. The Assembly Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. Hometown Hero Award winners are invited and introduced as a special guest at an Assembly floor session and given the opportunity to speak.
